Toddler Blocks

Merry Christmas!  On a special day I thought I should share a special quilt.

This is another quilt for the Empress.  I made this before we knew the age or gender of the child we would adopt.  It's hard to find gender neutral fabrics for toddlers!

It's a twin sized quilt and I sent it out for quilting.  At the time I didn't have the confidence to quilt something that large at home.

Recently we bought the Empress a day bed and this quilt is just a little too big.  It would have been perfect for a regular twin bed.  Add one more project to the todo list....

I completed this quilt in 2014.  I finally found the time to photograph it.

Log Pyramid

Another challenge quilt for QuiltCon.  This one actually meets the challenge criteria (unlike Oops!).

UPDATE - My quilt was accepted for display at Quiltcon 2016!  Yay!  This is my very first competition quilt.

I started with a central square and added each surrounding triangle log cabin style.  I used a ruler to cut the strips.  The width and color of the strips was chosen (mostly) at random.

The quilting is similar to Oops!  I started with a central triangle and spiraled outwards following the seams of each strip.

The back is a single fabric.

My favorite thing about this quilt is the color scheme.  I love how the yellows, greens and blues go together.

On the Design Wall - Blue Moonshine

On the design wall December 8, 2015:

This project is a real test in dealing with pattern and color.

I started with a big bundle of Tula Pink Moonshine fabric.  LOTS of pattern and color!

I added a couple solids and starting making 8" square in a square blocks.  I made a LOT of them!

I split the pile into 3 groups - mostly blue, mostly red/pink and mostly orange/yellow.  I put the blue ones on the design wall.

Ouch! It felt too slapdash for me.  Next I tried grouping like colors and patterns together.

I liked this a bit better.  Finally I moved all the red squares to the middle.

Not horrible!  I'm going to stare at it for a few days before sewing it together.

Which version do you prefer?

Oops!

This quilt is titled "Oops!".  I had intended to submit it to one of the challenge categories at QuiltCon but I used the wrong brand of solids.  It's too bad because I'm quite happy (and surprised) with the results.

The challenge provided fat eigths of the black and white fabrics.  I added the aqua and coral solids.  I cut the strips without a ruler in random widths.  I chose the order of the fabrics (mostly) at random.

The quilting starts at the middle and spirals outward following the lines of the fabric.

I used up the scraps on the back.

This is my first quilt that feels truly improv and I'm quite proud!
